Gunmen bomb Nigerian police facility, set inmates free
Gunmen have bombed the Ihiala Police Divisional Headquarters in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, having thrown improvised explosive devices into the facility, which razed a building inside the station.
Penpushing reports that a resident Uju Okafor said the incident occurred at 3am on Wednesday, adding that the bombing and sporadic shootings by the gunmen caused the residents of the area sleepless night.
The resident said he was scared when he started hearing the heavy shootings and bomb explosions, explaining that it was later in the morning that residents realised that the attack was carried out at the police facility.
Penpushing further reports that another indigene of the area Chinonso Okoye, while narrating his own experience said the gunmen set some inmates free during the attack, recalling that it was very early this morning that the gunmen started shooting and throwing bombs.
The Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attack in a statement adding that some police operatives engaged the gunmen in a shoot-out during the attack and subsequently recovered one Ak-47 rifle.
Penpushing also reports that, Ikenga, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, said no life was lost in the incident and that the gunmen escaped the scene due to superior fire power of the operatives, adding that as at the time of filing this report the fire had been put off.
The police spokesperson on the setting free of inmates by the attackers said the police authority was on the trail of the escaped inmates, but did not give details on number of those inmates set free by the gunmen
