Foundation distributes free learning materials to public schools’ pupils in Abeokuta

A Non-Governmental Organization Promoting Education for Indigent Children Foundation (PEFIC) on Tuesday distributed textbooks and notebooks to 36 pupils selected from 12 public primary schools in Abeokuta.
Penpushing reports that the ceremony held at the Imo Methodist Primary School Hall, Oke-Yeke, Abeokuta was for the 2025/2026 academic session, and aimed to reinforce the foundation mission to support children from low-income homes.
The founder and chairman of the organisation, Alhaji Lateef Oridota described the initiative as the beginning of the realization of a vision to bridge educational gaps among underserved children.
Penpushing further reports that Oridota explained that the gesture was borne out of the understanding that government alone cannot meet all the educational needs of learners.
The convener noted that organisation, unveiled in June 2025 and formally registered in August of the same year, was created to mobilize resources and partner with stakeholders to promote access to quality basic education.
Penpushing also reports that, Oridota, however, lamented persistent challenges facing basic education in Nigeria, including inadequate teachers, shortage of learning materials, and dilapidated infrastructure.
The foundation boss urged parents to stop abandoning their responsibilities, stressing that it is not the duty of teachers to provide textbooks, stationery, or pursue children who refuse to attend classes.
“Parents must ensure that their children report to school and are picked after school hours. Let us stop overwhelming our teachers with duties that belong to parents’, Oridota emphasized.
Penpushing reports that the convener and founder expressed hope that the foundation would scale up its intervention to reach at least 1,000 learners next year, subject to available resources.

Penpushing further reports that the Chairman represented by Abiodun Ajayi described the donation as an important investment in the future of the children, adding that learning materials symbolize opportunity, growth, and relief for parents struggling with educational expenses.
The Chairman highlighted ongoing reforms by State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), including renovation of classrooms, provision of furniture and instructional materials, teacher training, strengthened school monitoring, and adult education programmes.
Penpushing also reports that the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) chairman urged parents to ensure that the donated materials are used judiciously and that pupils attend school regularly, just as he charged the pupils to make judicious use of the books
“To our dear pupils, these books are tools for your success. Use them wisely, read them, and complete your homework,” he advised.
Penpushing reports that Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji (Chief) M. Lawon Sobiye, described Promoting Education for Indigent Children Foundation (PEFIC) as useful to humanity, calling on well-meaning Nigerians to support the foundation so its mission can exceed expectations.
The beneficiaries’ pupils from Primary 2 to 5 received English Language, Mathematics, Yoruba Alawiye, Quantitative and Verbal Reasoning textbooks, writing workbooks, and four big notes each.
Penpushing further reports that the 12 beneficiaries include Emmanuel Anglican Primary School II, Imo Methodist Primary School, St. Peter Clavers (RCM), N.U.D Primary School Oke-Ijeun, Anglican Primary School Elega, and Muslim Model Primary School Ago-Oko.
The others are A.U.D Primary School II Onagboro, Kudirat Abiola Model Primary School Ebu Alaparo, Obafemi Owode LG Primary School II Adigbe, Odeda LG Primary School Agbaakin, Moshood Abiola Model School III Ajegunle, and Community Primary School Morekete.
