Former Vice chancellor, federal university of agriculture abeokuta, Professor Israel Adu dies at 76
The former Vice Chancellor of Federal University of Agriculture (FUNNAB), Abeokuta, Prof Israel Adu has died on Sunday, but the cause of death was yet to be made known as at the time of filing this report on Monday morning
Penpushing reports that, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Kolawole Salako made this known in a short statement, adding that the university authorities lamented the loss of the third substantive Vice Chancellor of the university
‘The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Kolawole Salako on behalf of the Governing Council, Senate, Staff and Students of FUNAAB, regrets to announce the death of Emeritus Professor Israel Folorunsho Adu who was the Third Substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) 2001 -2006 and President, Nigeria Institute of Animal Science (NIAS)’, Salako said.
The statement added that, the deceased who was survived by a wife, Agnes Adu, children and grandchildren was also the pioneer Pro-chancellor and Chairman, Governing Council, McPherson University, Seriki-Sotayo, Ogun State (2012-2016).
‘A man of many of parts, lover of students, a mentor to many FUNAAB staff and a Professor of Ruminant Nutrition and Management with special emphasis on small ruminants, was at one time appointed a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC) of FUNAAB before he emerged as the Vice-Chancellor’, the statement reads.
‘He was also a Dean, Student Affairs prior to being appointed the DVC. During his tenure as the Vice-Chancellor, FUNAAB won its first major award as the best specialized University in Nigeria alongside the best Vice-Chancellor award in Nigeria’.
Penpushing further reports that, Adu was a member of many professional bodies, among whom were the Nigerian Society for Animal Production (NSAP), International Goat Association (IGA) and African Small Ruminant Research Network (ASRRN).
The deceased was a recipient of the prestigious Alexander Von-Humboldt Foundation Fellowship and was a visiting Professor to the University of Giessen, Germany from 1988 to 1989. He joined the services of FUNAAB in 1990 and retired in 2014.
The late Professor has authored over 129 publications including eight monographs, three chapters in books, 16 invited keynote/public lectures, 76 journal papers and 26 referred conference proceedings.
Penpushing also reports that,he has received more than 34 national and institutional recognitions, honours and awards, most recent being the conferment of Emeritus Professorship on him by FUNAAB at its 27th Convocation Ceremony on January 28, 2020.
