Fleeing driver knocks police officer into canal

A 38-year-old driver, Sunday Okolo has knocked a police officer into a canal along Airport Road, Lagos, while attempting to evade arrest for driving against traffic, and offence which is gross violation of traffic laws and regulations in the state.

Penpushing reports that, the reckless driver, resident of Alose Close, Apapa,caused injuries to the law enforcement agents identified as David Zapania, who sustained fracture on his left hand, but immediately rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Center

The driver in a viral video about the incident was seen having encountered the law enforcement agents, made attempts to reverse his car and in the process knocked off the police officer standing behind into a canal.

Penpushing reports that, the Lagos State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi when contacted, confirmed the incident, adding that the driver had been arrested and as at the time of filing this report said he would be charge to court

“The incident occurred on Wednesday 24/2/21 at about 17 30hrs, when some Lastma personnel (who) were backed up by the police on enforcement duty within the state contravened (intercepted) a Toyota SUV, driving against the traffic along International Airport road.

“The driver resisted arrest and while trying to escape, a police inspector David Zapania was knocked down from the bridge and fell into a carnal. The police inspector was rescued and rushed to the Lagos State Emergency and Trauma Center where he was attended to and discharged, but sustained fracture on his left hand,” Adejobi said.

Penpushing further reports that, Adejobi said the vehicle had been impounded, adding that while sympathising with the injured police officer, the Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, said the command had zero tolerance for gross violation of traffic laws and regulations in the state.
