First Nigerian female radio station, WFM clocks 7

The first female radio station in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa with gender sensitive and licenced by the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to broadcast programme for women and their family has clocked seven years

Penpushing reports that, the station on 91.7 MHz was founded on December 18 2015 with fear and trepidation, launched an unusual thematic radio station into Nigeria’s broadcast space, and till date remain relevant

The radio station within the period of its laudable performances has equally gotten approval to operate in the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria, and eagerly looking forward to the next seven years in fulfilment of its mission of using radio as a tool for women development.

Penpushing further reports that, core objectives of the popular radio station include keeping listeners company throughout the day with quality, relevant, informative and entertaining programmes that will cut across business, politics, education, sports, music, news, current affairs, relationships and family entertainment from the woman’s perspective.

The objectives emphasis also include; to use  the station as a tool for women development and become the most reliable, trusted and leading source of information, and to continue to create more female-centric programmes that will amplify the voice of women and foster national development.

Penpushing also reports that, the station emphasized that core values are: Gender equality, integrity, respect, fairness, teamwork and accountability, with conviction that with God’s help, the unwavering support of the public and partners it will not look back in contributing positively to the broadcasting industry

The Founder of the station, Toun Okewale-Sonaiya speaking with Penpushing media appreciated God and the listening public and partners of the radio station for the love and support, which she said the management is not taking for granted.

‘WFM 91.7 MHz is a Nigerian gender sensitive and specialized radio station licensed by Nigerian Broadcasting Commission to broadcast programs for women and their family. It is the first female-oriented radio station in Sub-Saharan Africa’, Okewale-Sonaiya said.

‘With our newly approved Radio Licences to operate in the 6 geopolitical zones of Nigeria, we eagerly look forward to the next 7 years in fulfilment of our mission of using Radio as a tool for Women Development’, she added.

‘With God’s help, the unwavering support of the public and our partners, we have not looked back. We are grateful to God, the listening public and our partners for the love and support. We do not take your support and love for granted’, she stated.

Penpushing reports that, the proactive radio station has been in partnership with United Nations (UN) Women and Government of Canada to fight the course of women ahead of the forthcoming 2023 general elections in Nigeria
