FIRST GIRLS SECONDARY SCHOOL IN NIGERIA, ST ANNE’S SCHOOL, IBADAN CELEBRATES 150 YEARS OF EXISTENCE

The three day events which started on Thursday, October 17 with the 1974 – 1979 Set 40th School Leaving Anniversary Thanksgiving and School Quiz will end on Saturday 19th with Thanksgiving service at Molete Baptist Church, Ibadan and followed with entertainment of guest at Jogor Center Hall of Grace.

The chairperson of the 150th Anniversary, Mrs Olufunmilayo Sholeye, said that “In fulfillment of the mandate giving to our committee to planned, organized and execute a succefssul 150th celebration to mark the all-inclusive achievement of the first girls secondary school in Nigeria, we were able to get the in touch with some old students of this school in the spirit of collaboration for them to contribute to their alma matter.

“Every old girls of this school have  contributed immensely for the success of this school, and all their contributions has been a great benefit for the success of the 150th anniversary’, the chairperson of the anniversary committee said.

Penoushing further reports that, Sholeye however called on the young students of the schools to always put God first in whatever they are doing and emulate the former students  in contributing their own quota for the development of the school by giving back to their alma matta.

“Life experience will teach you how to toe the right part in your journey, so this will enable you to attain your set goals and your heart desires’,Sholeye  emphasised.

Penpushing also reports that, in his address, the Commissioner of Education, Science and Technology in Oyo State, Prof. Sangodoyin who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Arch Adebowale Balogun noted that old students of schools in Oyo State have played a significant roles for the development of secondary education in the State noting that  this has assist the government to take education to the next level.

“Education policy of this State will improve if you can collaborate and assist the Government in some areas of education, because Government  cannot do it alone. The determination of the new administration in the State is to take education to a greater height and make it one of its priority’

 ‘The Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, has allocated 10% of this year budget to education and abolished all forms of illegal payment in our schools to relief the parents. The State Government has also make a provision for compendium of past questions to assist the SSCE candidates, we are ready to recruit qualified teachers to fill the vacancies of shortage of teachers in our schools”, he stated

The Commissioner however appealed to stakeholders in and outside the State to join hands with the Government, so as to be part of transformation going on in education sector in the State, and to revived education and other sectors in Oyo State.

Penpushing reports that, the event witnessed the commissioning of some projects by the old girls of the school such as renovation of some class rooms, renovation of the school toilets, renovation of the school hall, building of the school e- library, and painting of the school fence and gate among others.
