First black president of world methodist council, Sunday Mbang is dead
The first black President of the World Methodist Council and former President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Dr Sunday Mbang has died at the age of 86 on Tuesday May 16, 2023
Penpushing reports that the Secretary of the Church, Babatunde Taiwo confirmed this in a letter to the heads of the church, on Wednesday, and condoled the deceased family as well as the people of Akwa Ibom State for the loss
The letter described the Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church, as a man who embodied the pioneering and path-finding spirit of Nigerian Methodism as he scored many firsts, adding that he will surely and sorely be missed.
“He will surely and sorely be missed by his beloved Church, Methodist Church to which he gave spiritual, intellectual and servant leadership for more than two decades, and the entire body of Christ in Nigeria and the Diasporas’, the letter reads.
Penpushing further reports that late Mbang was born in Idua Eket, Eket local government area of Akwa Ibom State on August 26, 1936, and studied at the Effoi Group School, University of Ibadan, Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel and Harvard University,America.
Meanwhile, the known frankly speaking and fearless clergyman later became a Minister in 1961 after going through Theological education and training in Nigeria and overseas.
