Fire guts popular Masaka market in Nasarawa

The Masaka market in Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State has been gutted by fire with hundreds of shops and valuables worth millions of naira destroyed.

Penpushing reports that eyewitnesses disclosed that the ravaging fire occurred late Friday night from about 10:30 p.m., describing the scene as pathetic, adding that the fire spread rapidly, catching traders unaware.

The witnesses said residents said rushed to the market and found everything engulfed in flames, adding that the community members called the fire service, but they arrived late, citing a lack of water.

Penpushing further reports that the residents estimated that over 500 shops were destroyed in the flame, explaining that the traders were still at the market when the fire started, adding that the cause was unknown

Penpushing also reports that Governor Abdullahi Sule visited the scene on Saturday, pledging support for the affected traders, while the incident has raised concerns about the lack of fire safety measures in markets in the state.
