Female journalists commend women solidarity march to support special seats bill

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) have commended the courage, resilience, and unwavering commitment of Nigerian women who marched in solidarity to the National Assembly in support of the Special Seats Bill.

‘Today’s historic demonstration is not just a march—it is a movement. It is the loud, united, and unmistakable voice of Nigerian women demanding equity, justice, and fair representation in governance. It is a powerful reminder that democracy cannot thrive when half of its population remains underrepresented’, the statement reads.

Penpushing further reports the women journalists pointed out that for decades, women in Nigeria have contributed immensely to nation-building across all sectors, yet their presence in elective offices remains alarmingly low.

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) explained that the Special Seats Bill is not a privilege; rather it is a necessary corrective mechanism to address systemic imbalance and to deepen democratic inclusion.

‘NAWOJ stands shoulder to shoulder with every woman, every ally, and every advocate who has taken a stand for this cause. We commend the peaceful, organized, and resolute manner in which the march was conducted. Your voices have echoed beyond the gates of the National Assembly—they have resonated across the nation’.

‘We urge lawmakers at the National Assembly to rise above partisan interests and act in the spirit of justice and progress. The passage of the Special Seats Bill will send a strong message that Nigeria is committed to inclusive governance and the empowerment of women’.

‘To our sisters across the country: keep the flag flying. Let this not be a one-day expression of solidarity, but a sustained movement until victory is achieved. History has shown that every major milestone for women’s rights was won through persistence, unity, and courage. This moment is no different’, the statement stated.

‘NAWOJ calls on all women’s groups, civil society organizations, professional bodies, and well-meaning Nigerians to continue mobilizing, advocating, and engaging constructively until the Special Seats Bill becomes law. We will not relent. We will not retreat. We will not be silenced. Until justice is done and equitable representation is secured, the struggle continues.
