Federal Road Safety Corps launches ember months safety campaign in ogun state

The Ogun State Sector of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) on Tuesday launched its 2024 Ember Months Safety Campaign under the theme: “Speak Up Against Dangerous Driving: Crashes Kill More Passengers than Drivers.”

Penpushing reports that Sector Commander Corp’s Commander Akinwumi Fasakin at a press conference held at Iwe-Iroyin Press Centre, Oke-Ilewo, Abeokuta highlighted heightened measures to curb road accidents, ensure smoother traffic, and promote safety during the busy holiday season.

The Sector Commander who spoke on behalf of the Corps Marshal of Shehu Mohammed emphasized that the ember months, is associated with increased travel, often result in road congestion and accidents.

Penpushing further reports that he attributed these incidents to reckless driving behaviour, which makes the journey perilous for road users, and equally urged the corps’ on need to intensify efforts to promote road safety and reduce crashes.

The Commander disclosed that the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) have launched Mega Public Enlightenment and Sensitization Campaigns in all states and the Federal Capital Territory, with enforcement measures on high alert.”

Penpushing also reports that he stated that the Federal Road Safety Corps(FRSC) has revised public education strategies to engage both drivers and passengers, explaining that the strategy arose from the need to engage passengers.

“We have launched Mega Public Enlightenment and Sensitization Campaigns in all states and the Federal Capital Territory, with enforcement measures on high alert. We have revised our public education strategy, introducing new dynamic approaches. These include mega town hall meetings, motorcades, transit, rest areas, and loading bays advocacy’, he stated

‘This strategy arose from the need to engage passengers and encourage them to assert their rights, thereby curbing drivers’ excesses, because it is on record that more passengers are killed in road traffic crashes than drivers. Hence the need to take up the responsibility of being more vigilant while on transit’, Fasakin added

Penpushing reports that the Commander, however, declared that motorists violating traffic rules, such as over speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol, or using phones while driving, will face immediate arrest and prosecution.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) boss added that the Ogun state sector will establish mobile courts during the ember months to expedite the prosecution of offenders, sending a strong message about the importance of adhering to traffic regulations.

Penpushing also reports that he explained that the corps is in collaboration with other agencies, including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), to enforce strict traffic rules.

“We are going to enforce strict traffic rule and regulations. The command will also with NDLEA, TRACE, and other relevant agencies to arrest errand motors on highway across the state. We are also working with federal ministry of works and state ministry by putting in place palliatives for some bad portion roads in the state. This is at the outcome of our road safety audit so that we can have smooth traffic during the ember month’, he said.

“Lagos- Ibadan, Ijebu Ode, Sagamu express way, our men will be there 24hrs to ensure that no motorist sleep on the road during the festive season and at the same time to endure safety on our Nigerian roads’, Fasakin assured
