Federal Government warns University of Lagos against planned convocation, describes it as illegal
The Federal Ministry of Education has read a riot act to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Toyin Ogundipe to desist from the proposed convocation of the university, stressing that, the step taken to organise the convocation did not follow due process.
Penpushing reports that, the order was contained in a letter captioned.’Re: Invitation to the 2019 Convocation Ceremony of the University of Lagos’, dated March 2, 2020, with reference number FME/PS/606/C.1/VOL.111/108.
The letter signed by Sonny Echno, Permanent Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education, was forwarded to the Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission, Abuja, for onward directive transmission to the Vice Chancellor of the university.
Penpushing further reports that, the letter emphasized that, the proposed convocation ceremonies were not approved by the Governing Council in line with the laws of the university; hence, it is illegal to hold
‘The attention of the Honourable Minister has been drawn to the attached copy of letter dated 2nd March,2020 from the Pro Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Dr B.O Babalakin to the effect that the 2019 convocation ceremonies were not approved by the Govering Council in line with the laws of the university’, the letter reads.
‘I am to therefore, request that you kindly advise the Vice Chancellor to suspend the convocation and ensure full compliance with the process. Please accept the assurances of the best regards of the Honourable Minister’, the letter warned
