Federal government takeover of Tai Solarin University is embarrassing, says Peoples Democratic Party

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ogun State Chapter has frowned at the take over of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) by the federal government attributing the take over to failure of ruling government to manage it well.

Penpushing reports that Publicity Secretary of the opposition party Otunba Kayode Adebayo made this known in a statement stressing that the take over was not achievement but embarrassing indictment for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)

‘For the PDP, this development is not an achievement but an embarrassing indictment to Mr. Abiodun- led All Progressives Congress, APC government in managing the fortunes and other invaluable assets of our dear state’, Adebayo wrote.

Penpushing further reports that the statement pointed out that it is a public knowledge that the Tai Solarin University of Education, (TASUED) was established by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration (2003 – 2011) led by former Governor Gbenga Daniel.

The statement explained the establishment was to expand access to higher education and provide employment opportunities for Ogun State citizens and residents, adding that the globally acclaimed premier university in Nigeria has suffered an undeserved neglect from the current administration despite operating a trillion-naira budget annually.

‘It is shameful that the same APC government that is fond of boasting of economic progress cannot adequately fund just one of its most significant academic institutions. Oh, what a begging shame! Adebayo said

Penpushing also reports that the opposition noted with concern that this serial failure is not limited to the poor management and funding of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) only.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) argued that it equally affects other renowned state-owned institutions of higher learning in the state, adding that by implications, the neglect has also cost the state its control over an institution originally designed to serve Ogun state indigenes.

‘Clearly, with this takeover, Ogun state has lost the ability to determine its admission policies, priorities, and employment opportunities, weakening its influence over an institution meant to empower its indigenes’.

‘Again, the recent takeover of the university is a welcome development because the people should not fold their arms and watch all public owned institutions in the state go into extinction. If taking over these facilities would rescue them from rotting away, we would strongly align our thoughts with such lifesaving measures’.

‘Of course, deliberate acts of needless neglect and abandonment by Mr. Abiodun’s clueless government cuts across other sectors of governance. To say that Ogun state has the worst road network and quality in the South-West region is clearly stating the obvious’.

‘Just 2 days ago, residents of Ota township in Ado Odo/Ota LG, the industrial capital of Ogun State took to the social media to cry and lament the complete collapse of the popular Odo’pako bridge in Ota’.

‘Odo’pako bridge connects Ota township to the Agbado Oke – Odo axis of Lagos state serving as a major link road for all road users between Ogun and Lagos States. The road that was hurriedly tarred sometime last year has failed when the rains are just not here yet’.

‘Every discerning mind knows that the ruling APC government in Ogun has manifestly demonstrated a lack of capacity and basic ideas of running a government that works for its people. Perhaps Mr Abiodun and his gang of incompetent friends in government are telling the innocent taxpayers of Ogun State to beg the FG to also take over the entire machinery of government in Ogun state’.

‘Therefore, in order to salvage the pitiable conditions of other public higher institutions in the state, we make it bold to invite members of the public, critical stakeholders and other men of good conscience to join force with us in asking Mr Dapo Abiodun to give a detailed account of government spendings in the educational sector and his plans or programs of actions that would salvage the remaining institutions from total collapse. We cannot afford to pretend that all is well with our dear state while the reality stares us in the face’.

‘Mr. Abiodun must know that no matter the amount of media deodorization that is deployed by the government, the takeover of TASUED by the FG confirms a disturbing state of public education in Ogun state. Governance is about responsibility, not excuses. Mr. Abiodun must not be allowed to bury the fortunes of the state on the altar of flimsy excuses’, Adebayo wrote
