Egbetokun forced to resign as inspector general of police
The Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has removed Kayode Egbetokun as the Inspector-General of Police, as he was asked to step aside during a meeting they had at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, Federal Capital Territory (FCT)
Penpushing reports that sources at the villa disclosed that Egbetokun was asked to resign on Monday, and this development was equally confirmed by top government functionaries, who declared that Egbetokun is gone
“Yes. Egbetokun is gone A formal statement is being prepared as we speak. The announcement will be made soon’, a source from the villa emphasized on Tuesday,
Penpushing further reports that as at the time of filing this report the Force spokesman, Benjamin Hundeyin, was yet to make any official statement on the development, while in same vein, the Presidential spokesman, Bayo Onanuga was yet to react.
The sources within the police hierarchy hinted that a successor may have been identified, although no official statement had been issued as of the time of filing this report, but sources disclosed that Egbetokun maybe replace by Tunji Disu.
Penpushing also reports that the sources said Disu had been contacted in connection with the position, adding that the official confirmation by the authorities is been awaited as at the time of this report
The immediate past police boss was appointed by President Tinubu as the 22nd Inspector General of Police on June 19, 2023, while his substantive appointment was confirmed by the Nigeria Police Council on October 31, 2023.
Penpushing reports that Egbetokun appointed as Inspector General of Police at 58, was due to retire on September 4, 2024, upon reaching the mandatory age of 60, however, the National Assembly amended the police law, allowing him to serve his full four-year term as Inspector General of Police unless removed by the President.
The removed Inspector General of Police was expected to complete his four-year tenure and remain in office until October 31, 2027, but despite complaints by many Nigerians, the Presidency explained that Egbetokun remained in office legally.
The Presidency cited the amended Police Act 2024, which allows an appointed Inspector General of Police to serve a fixed four-year term regardless of their age or years of service.
Penpushing further reports that Egbetokun is now 61 years old, and he marked 35 years in service on March 3, 2025, while his tenure as Inspector General of Police was marked by several controversies, including human rights abuses.
