Egbas to report Chinese to deity over production of Adire fabrics
The Egbas of the South-West of Nigeria have resolved to drag Chinese to the deity over their attempt to take over the production of Adire fabrics, known to be initiative of the Egbas.
Penpushing reports that, the position was made known at a press conference held at Alake Palace in Abeokuta, in preparatory of the 35th Lisabi Day celebration scheduled to hold between February 28-March 6, 2022.
The Alake and Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo was asked his view on the emergence of Chinese in the production of Adire, which now be impongrted to the country by the Chinese.
Penpushing further reports that, the royal father, having earlier frowned at the ugly development, with a call on the Egbas, to rise up to the challenges, therefore called on Iyaloja of Egbaland, Chief (Mrs) Kemi Oloyede to respond to the issue.
The Iyaloja in her response, could not hold her annoyance over what she described as invasion of Chinese to Adire production, and declared that, it is in the pipeline to approach the deity on need to intervene.
‘We are going to report the Chinese to the deity at Olumo rock, as we prepare for the Lisabi Day. It is no hidden fact that, production of Adire is the initiative of Egbas, and till date, we are in charge’, she declared
‘Those ones being produced by Chinese are fake, which does not last or have any durability and quality. We won’t allow them to take over our heritage and glory. As I said, we are going to report them to the deity’, she emphasized
Penpushing further reports that, Oloyede said the Chinese were faking Egba locally made Adire with inferior and skin hitching clothing materials, adding that there was need for all Adire manufacturers to give awareness to the people concerning the qualities in the locally made Adire.
The Iyaloja urged Egba business men and women to improve on the standards of locally made Adire and its finishing to meet the internationally acceptable quality standards
Penpushing reports that, in her contributions, first female President of the Nigerian Chamber of Commerce, Industries Mines and Agriculture,(NACCIMA), Iyalode Alaba Lawson disclosed that the chambers had been working on solution to the Chinese invasion of the Egba Adire business, especially in the area of trade mark.
The Iyalode of Egbaland explained that, the chambers had been interceding in the seizures of Kano Base clothing materials for Adire by men of the Nigerian Customers.
Penpushing also reports that, Lawson called on Oba Gbadebo to intervene with the customs to stop harassing the Adire business men and women, just as she cautioned some Egba women to stop patronising the Chinese Inferior Adire materials.
The Iyalode of Yorubaland pointed out that this was a lazy and shot cut approach to doing good business, emphasizing that Adire was Egba copyright, whereby, it shouldn’t be duplicated.
