Controversial video of former anambra state governor Willie Obiano in crimes commission custody surfaces
A controversial video of the immediate past Governor of Anambra State,Willie Obiano dressed in shorts and in a white shirt, while seen drinking from a bottled water in custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) has hit the social media.
Penpushing reports that, the source of the video which was believed to have been leaked was yet to be known as at the time of filing this report, and it has elicited reactions, with submission that, it was a bad image for the commission.
The former Governor, it is recalled was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) while on his way out of the country, and thereafter transported to the headquarters of the commission in Abuja
Penpushing further reports that, the arrest of the former Governor came, barely few hours, he handed over power to the new Governor of the State, Charles Soludo, at a ceremony where Obiano’s wife was slapped by widow of the Biafran warlord, Odumegwu Ojukwu, Bianca Ojukwu when they both engaged in a scuffle
The details of the allegations against Obiano are still sketchy, but sources as the commission said he is being quizzed over alleged misappropriation of public funds, including N5billion Sure-P and N37billion security vote which was withdrawn in cash.
Penpushing also reports that, it is on record, that, on November 15, 2021, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in a letter to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) requested the service to place the Governor on a watchlist and inform it anytime he is travelling out of the country from any of the international airports and other points of entry and exit.
The spokesperson for the former Governor, James Eze while reacting to the viral video footage said the leakage of the clip was a blight on the image of the agency, arguing that, such treatment to his boss in detention was awful.
Penpushing reports that, Eze confirmed that the footage in circulation is authentic, adding that it does not portray his boss in a good light, stressing that those behind the leakage does not mean well for the former Governor.
“I am confirming what was in the video, and whoever allowed that video to come out and circulate heavily on social media, does not mean well for the image of Nigeria and the image of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and for the image of my former boss, the former governor of Anambra state,” he said.
Penpushing further reports that, the spokesman also accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of persecuting the former Governor, arguing that an accused person is presumed innocent until he is convicted.
“And I personally believe that this is a witch-hunt as the matter has been treated with a video recording of the former governor in the EFCC facility. It makes it very obvious that this is not the EFCC usual trail as we know it’, he stated.
“An accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a competent Court of law. And for them to be making a mockery in the media of a video of him in his underpants circulating in the public, I think the media should be astounded by that because it is Obiano today, it could be anybody else tomorrow.”
Penpushing also reports that, Eze there was need to treat people with dignity, and therefore called for an immediate investigation of what he described as an awful treatment of a perceived offender.
The Head Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Commission (EFCC), Wilson Uwujaren , when contacted was as at the time of filing this report, kept sealed lip on the controversial video, explaining that he later issued out a statement.
