Cerebral broadcast journalist, Hakeem Akintunde buried in hometown Abeokuta

The remains of former Chairman Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ogun State Chapter and Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde were on Thursday committed to mother earth.

Penpushing reports that it would be recalled that Akintunde a versatile broadcaster and respected sports guru, popularly called Akoko lost the battle for survival on Wednesday night after two years battle with cancer ailment

The body of the deceased was conveyed in Ogun State Government ambulance on his final journey which started with Janazah prayer at Secretariat Muslim Community Central Mosque located opposite Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) along Oke-Ilewo- Presidential Boulevard, Abeokuta.

Penpushing further reports that hundreds of his colleagues in journalism profession, associates and family members among others were presented at the event, which was later moved to Sunnah cemetery at Olomore, Abeokuta for internment.

The Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo has mourned demise of the cerebral broadcast journalist describing the death, as a major loss to the state and the media industry, noting that the deceased was a distinguished, thoroughbred media professional and accomplished manager whose commitment to duty was exceptional.

Penpushing also reports that Abiodun in a statement of condolence hailed the late Akintunde, recalling that even while battling serious health challenges, including kidney-related ailments, he remained resourceful, diligent, and deeply devoted to his work, particularly in sports broadcasting where he built an enduring legacy.

The Governor described the late broadcaster as warm, pleasant, and highly respected among colleagues, adding that his passing after a prolonged illness marked the end of a remarkable career defined by excellence, passion, and professionalism.

“As a media professional, Alhaji Akeem Akintunde was an outstanding personality — pleasant to be with and completely dedicated to his job. He was a manager of managers, a mentor to many, and a shining light in journalism and sports reporting. His passage marks the end of a remarkable career built on dedication, excellence, and unwavering commitment to the profession’, Abiodun wrote

Penpushing reports that the Governor extended his heartfelt condolences to Akintunde’s family, friends, and the entire Ogun State Television (OGTV) community, describing the late broadcaster as a gem whose absence would be deeply felt.

“We have lost a source of joy, professionalism, and inspiration. May Almighty Allah grant him Aljannah Firdaus and comfort all those he left behind,” Abiodun added.

Penpushing further reports that in similar vein, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR), Ogun State Chapter has condoled family of the late veteran broadcaster, adding that the demise was a sad development.

The Institute in a statement issued by the Chairman, Seun Boye and Secretary Kunle Olayeni, pointed out that the deceased was a thorough-bred broadcaster who had a unique ability to captivate audiences with his insightful analysis and commentary.

‘The Ogun State Chapter, Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) is deeply saddened by the demise of Alhaji Akeem Akintunde, a former State Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) and staff of the Ogun State Television (OGTV)’, the statement read.

‘On behalf of the Executive and members, we condole with the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), SWAN and OGTV on the passing of the seasoned sports journalist and highly respected broadcaster’, it added

‘The late Akintunde was a thorough-bred broadcaster who had a unique ability to captivate audiences with his insightful analysis and commentary. He served with dedication and commitment not only at his station but also within NUJ and SWAN, which he led with purpose and panache. His passion was evident in his work, and he would be sorely missed by colleagues, friends and fans’.

‘We share in the grief of the entire community of journalists in Ogun State and our thoughts and prayers are also with the family and friends of the deceased during this difficult time. As we join our colleagues in the media profession to mourn this painful departure, we pray for the peaceful repose to the soul of Alhaji Akeem Akintunde’.
