Call off your strike and return to classroom now, Nigeria government tells university lecturers

The Nigerian government has ordered striking university lecturers to return to class and start teaching with immediate effect, emphasizing that the pro-chancellors and vice-chancellors should ensure that the ordered is strictly adhered to.

Penpushing reports that the order added that the management of all federal universities should comply with the order of the National Industrial Court (NIC) directing the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) to return to classrooms pending the determination of the substantive matter before it.

The management of the various universities, as a result of the order is currently confused of how to execute the new directive by the government, as number of those who reacted said they were worried based on the judicial interpretation of the current status of the pending case at the court.

Penpushing further reports that, as contained in a letter addressed to the universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the new directive seems to have ignored the stay of execution application filed at the appeal court against the NIC order by the lecturers’ union.
