Building collapses in Lagos killing 3 persons
A building under construction in Yaba area of Lagos State has collapsed on Saturday, with three deaths recorded as at the time of filing this report, while this ugly development occurred about three months when similar incident occurred in Ikoyi area of the town killing 40 people.
Penpushing reports that, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed, explaining that at least five workers were still trapped under the rubble and two people have been rescued as at press time.
The Acting Zonal Coordinator of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Ibrahim Farinloye, said the incident happened at about 3pm, adding that the building as at Thursday had shown signs.
Penpushing further reports that, Farinloye said when one of the neighbours drew attention of the contractors to it, they told him off, adding that traffic gridlock frustrated the mobilisation of heavy-duty equipment to the accident site.
The Director General of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA),Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, said the state’s emergency responders are on ground at the incident site,adding that recovery operation ongoing for other victims, as at the time of filing this report.
Penpushing also reports that, the Lagos State government has, however disclosed that the developer of the three-storey building had been arrested, while the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, said the government moved in swiftly to minimize impact at the site.
”Preliminary findings indicated that the site had been sealed off twice by the Lagos State Building Control Agency in 2021 for non-compliance with building regulations, after which the site was abandoned’, a statement said.
“However, the developer later broke the government seal, sneaked into the site and recommenced construction without official authorisation. As at 9:00 p.m., one person had been pulled out alive, while two deaths were recorded’
