Buhari replaces service chiefs after years of complaints by Nigerians
President Muhammed Buhari on Tuesday relieved the nation service chiefs of their positions, after years of complaints by Nigerians following worsening and unresolved insecurity which has become daily occurrence.
Penpushing reports that, the Presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, made this known in a statement, adding that Buhari has accepted the immediate resignation of the Service Chiefs, and their retirement from service.
The affected officers which include: four men Gabriel Olonisakin, Tukur Buratai; Abubakar Sadique and Ibok Ibas, were supposed to have retired over two years ago in view of their years of service
Penpushing further reports that, rather than retired them at the appropriate time, the President kept mute and retain them in office, inspite of threatening security situation across the country, which many havoc rendered in the North-West and North-Central states.
The Boko Haram insurgents worsened the situation as they continued incessant attacks leading to maiming and killings of innocent Nigerians, with thousands rendered homeless and many of them becoming residents of Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps.
Penpushing reports that, as Buhari finally relieved them of their positions he praised them for what he called their overwhelming achievements in efforts at bringing enduring peace to the country.
The National Assembly, it is recalled on three different occasions called for the sack of the service chiefs as the security situation failed to improve, but on the three times Buhari ignored the lawmakers
Penpushing reports that, in replacement of the relieved service chiefs he appointed Major General Leo Irabor, who formerly led Nigeria’s war against Boko Haram as the Theatre Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole as the Chief of Defence Staff.
The statement added that, Major General Ibrahim Attahiru, who had also led the war against Boko Haram as Chief of Army Staff, as well as Rear Admiral A.Z. Gambo, as Chief of Naval Staff and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao as Chief of Air Staff.
Penpushing further reports that, the President in the statement congratulated the new Service Chiefs, and urged them to be loyal and dedicated in the discharge of their responsibilities for the country.
