British Prime Minister Boris Johnson resigns
The embattled British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, on Thursday AFTERNOON at 10, Downing Street, London announced his resignation as the leader of the Conservative Party(CP) and effectively as Prime Minister.
Penpushing reports that, Johnson, however, explained that he will remain in office until the Conservative Party elects a new leader who will also assume office as Prime Minister, which is expected to be visible before October.
The outgoing Prime Minister in his speech thanked the Conservative Party and the British voters for trusting the party and helping it to victory in the 2019 elections, and expressed that he he felt bad in giving up the best job in the world
Penpushing further reports that, Johnson pointed out that, in politics, no one is indispensable,assuring that from now on until the new Prime Minister is in place, the interest of the British people will continue to be served and pledged to support the new leader who emerges.
The resignation of Johnson, it is recalled followed calls for his resignation from his party members with about 50 leaders of the party resigning their government positions, while he came under severe public scrutiny over the party gates scandal.
Penpushing also reports that, others include his recent appointment of Christopher Pincher as Chief Whip despite being aware of his misconduct, as well as the current economic hardship faced by Britons, while a number of Ministers who resigned cited a loss of confidence in Johnson as a reason for their resignation.
