Armed robbers attack computer village, kill trader

A gang of suspected armed robbers violently launched attack at a phone market popularly called computer village located in Omida-Ibara-Oke-Ilewo axis of Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital and made away with various telephones and accessories worth millions of Naira.

Penpushing reports that the gang arrived the scene of operations at about 6.00pm on Wednesday and started shooting sporadically which scared number of shop owners and customers, and in the process, a trader identified as Dayo Bankole was shot dead by the armed robbers

The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi who confirmed the incident said the police drafted to the scene, in conjuction with Amotekun Corps repelled the armed robbery gang and arrested one of the gang members.

‘The armed robbery gang stormed the market in the evening and started shooting sporadically and creating fear and stealing expensive phones. The police repelled the armed robbery gang and arrested one of the gang members”,Oyeyemi said

Penpushing further reports that Oyeyemi explained that the armed robbers on sighting the contigent, engaged them in a gun battle, adding as a result of the superior fire power of the policemen, the hoodlums took to their heels.

The police spokesman said unfortunately, Dayo Bankole, a trader in the market, who was shot by the robbers, gave up the ghost while receiving treatment at the General Hospital, Ijaye Abeokuta, disclosing that one double-barrelled local gun and assorted criminal charms were recovered from the arrested suspect.

Penpushing also reports that he stated that Commissioner of Police, Frank Mba, as at the time of filing this report had directed the transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligent Department, (CIID), for investigation.

The Commissioner of Police, however, added that to enable the command get other runaway suspects, with gunshot wounds, authorities of the hospitals and pharmacies in the state, should alert the police before medical attention to such patients.
