Appeal Court affirms Philip Shaibu as Edo state deputy governor

The Court of Appeal in Abuja has affirmed Philip Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, and subsequently dismissed the appeal filed by the Edo House of Assembly which sought to uphold his (Shaibu’s) impeachment.

Penpushing reports that the court, in its judgment, affirmed the judgment of the trial court which reinstated Shaibu as the Deputy Governor of the stat, and with the ruling, the Court of Appeal has affirmed the judgment of a Federal High Court in Abuja which earlier dismissed the Edo Assembly’s impeachment of Shaibu.

The Edo State House of Assembly it is recalled removed Shaibu from office on April 8, 2024 after accusing him of disclosing government’s secret, an allegation Shaibu said was hatched because of his Governorship ambition and equally vowed to challenge his removal at the court.

Penpushing further reports that assembly after removing Shaibu, confirmed Governor Godwin Obaseki’s nomination of Omabayo Godwins as his replacement, however, the lower court on July 17, 2024 overturned Shaibu’s removal and reinstated him.

The judge, Justice James Omotosho, had ordered the payment of Shaibu’s entitlements since April, when he was removed from office, and equally ordered the Inspector General of Police to restore his security.

Penpushing also reports that Shaibu, without waiting for the outcome of the appeal, recently resumed office as the Deputy Governor of the state, and in response the state government accused him of impersonation.

The reinstated Deputy Governor in swift response described the state government’s allegation as an affront on the judiciary and a clear violation of the trial court judgment, describing Godwins as an appointee of Governor Godwin Obaseki, arguing that he( Godwins) was not voted for by the people of the state.
