Anti-Crimes commission barricades former governor Yahaya Bello’s Abuja home to effect arrest
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) operatives on Wednesday barricaded the residence of the immediate-past Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello located on Benghazi Street in Wuse Zone 4, Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Penpushing reports that the operatives arrived the house at about 9.30 a.m. in a bid to effect Bello’s arrest who has been having a running battle with the commission before end of his tenure as Governor in January.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) longtime interest in Bello led to the filing of N10 billion corruption charges against his new Ali Bello, and a co-defendant for money laundering at the Federal High Court in Abuja in 2022.
Penpushing further reports that it is recalled that on February 5, 2024, days after completion of his tenure, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amended the charges, raising the number of counts from 10 to 17 against the younger Bello and his co-defendant, Dauda Suleiman, in a trial that dates back to 2022.
The prosecution named Bello in one of the newly-introduced counts as an accomplice, but the commission has yet to charge him as a defendant, while in the fresh count, the agency accused Bello of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of funds to the tune of N84 billion.
Penpushing also reports that the barricade of the former Governor’s home attracted a crowd to the house and neigbouring streets, while as at the time of filing this report the authorities of the commission was yet to make any official statement on the development
The Head Media and Publicity of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Dele Oyewale, as at the time of filing this report remined muted, while in reaction the media office of the former Governor has condemned the action of the agency, arguing that the move by the commission was a siege, and violated a subsisting court order.
