The family of Pa Salami Akintunde of Itesi, Abeokuta, has formally announced the passing of Alhaji Hakeem Ololade Akanni Akintunde, a veteran sports broadcaster, former Chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), and former Director of Programmes at Ogun State Television (OGTV), whose life embodied discipline, consistency, and selfless service to humanity.
Alhaji Hakeem Ololade Akanni Akintunde’s journey was marked by purpose, clarity, and steady growth. His educational foundation was laid at St. Mary Primary School, Rumola, Port Harcourt, Rivers State (1971–1974), and later strengthened at St. Claver’s School, Itesi, Abeokuta (1975–1978). In 1979, he gained admission into Baptist Boys’ High School, Abeokuta, where he completed his secondary education in 1984. He subsequently proceeded to Olabisi Onabanjo University, broadening his intellectual horizons and sharpening his professional outlook.
Beyond formal schooling, he distinguished himself as a lifelong learner, acquiring academic and professional qualifications from reputable institutions and earning certifications from recognized professional bodies. His intellectual curiosity was described as relentless, and his commitment to excellence unwavering. He believed knowledge was not an achievement to be displayed, but a responsibility to be deployed in service of others.
A devoted Muslim, he lived his faith with sincerity, humility, and quiet conviction. His submission to the will of Almighty Allah was reflected in his conduct, relationships, and service to humanity.
In recognition of his immense contributions to sports journalism and his enduring legacy, the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) announced the institution of an annual commemorative lecture in his honour. The lecture will hold every February 27 — marking what would have been his birthday — as a deliberate and lasting effort to immortalise his name and celebrate his service to the sporting community.
He was described as a man who lived honourably, laboured with integrity, and gave of himself without reservation. Observers noted the constancy of his character, stating that in success and in adversity, his values never shifted. He carried himself with quiet dignity and an inner discipline that commanded respect without demanding attention.
Even in the most difficult seasons of his life, his warmth of spirit reportedly remained intact. Alhaji Hakeem Ololade Akanni Akintunde was known to be jovial by nature and gentle in disposition. Illness did not erode his civility, nor did pain diminish his compassion. Those close to him said that even on his sickbed, he remained accessible — listening, advising, encouraging, and reassuring. He neither withdrew from people nor shut his doors, remaining true to his identity as a consummate professional, trusted mentor, and thorough gentleman.
A devoted sports enthusiast to the very end, he followed sporting developments with keen interest, analysed matches with clarity and balance, and continued to guide younger broadcasters and professionals who sought his counsel, even during critical moments of his life. His passion for the craft and his sense of responsibility to others endured until his final breath. In word and deed, he modelled what it means to serve a profession with honour.

The family also acknowledged the royal fathers who stood by him, most especially His Royal Majesty, Oba Alake Adedotun Aremu Gbadebo, the Paramount Ruler of Egbaland, whose fatherly presence and royal concern brought comfort and reassurance. Appreciation was equally extended to Chief S.O.A. Bankole, the Apena of Egbaland, for his steadfast support.
Gratitude was extended to the management and entire workforce of Ogun State Television — from the Managing Director to every member of staff — for their support, prayers, and professional solidarity during the period.
Special recognition was given to Hon. Bukola Olopade, former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, as well as Egbaland stakeholders, friends, and associates across generations who demonstrated their support in word and deed.
The family further recognised Nigerians at home and in the diaspora — particularly sports lovers — whose prayers, messages, and gestures of support were deeply reassuring.
Appreciation was also extended to media organisations, especially The Punch Newspaper, and to Prince Dimeji Kayode-Adedeji, Founder Penpushing Media alongside other media houses, for the empathy shown throughout the period.
The Old Boys of Baptist Boys’ High School, Abeokuta — particularly the 1984 and 1985 sets — were specially commended for their remarkable financial, moral, and emotional support. Also acknowledged were the Old Students of Baptist Boys’ High School, United States of America and Canada Forum, whose loyalty and unity were described as unforgettable.
The family concluded that the legacy of Alhaji Hakeem Ololade Akanni Akintunde — marked by courageousness, kindness, professionalism, discipline, and service — will continue to speak clearly and consistently for generations to come.
