ADEBUTU, EX-FEDERAL LAWMAKER IDENTIFIES SELF-SERVING POLITICIANS AS RESPONSIBLE FOR DEMOCRACY SETBACK
The politician emphasized that, Yorubas should look inwards to address its continuous division, stating that it was hightime, they should get united against all odds, noting that since June 12, 1993 elections, Nigeria has not achieved any free, fair and transparent election.
Penpushing further reports that, Adebutu, said the present political dispensation was a product of the agitations that followed the annulment of the June 12 elections, and called on political actors to give prominence to the ideals of the late Moshood Abiola.
The Former Federal Lawmaker lamented over the lack of true democracy in the country, pointing out that the current democratic system was gradually nose-diving, adding that, ”we have not had any free, fair and transparent election since the June 12 1993 Presidential election’.
He added, ‘June 12 means a lot to Nigerians and that is why we are celebrating it today, it is universal, it is the foundation of our contemporary politics today, it is what I can never forget. The efforts MKO Abiola made in bringing about democracy cannot be undermined, he sacrificed for the people, not only him and his wife, Kudirat Abiola”
”Where are we today, progressively in 1992, I will say we have gradually gone down; every electioneering process has always given way for no changes. Should we sit back in our homes and allow some self serving politicians to misdirect us. No regard for human life in the current administration. Should we sit in our homes where we were over- run by security”.
Penpushing also reports that, the politician therefore called on political actors to give prominence to the ideals of the late politician.
The former Special Adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan on Media and Publicity, Dr. Doyin Okupe in his remark noted that he was among the last three persons with the late MKO Abiola as at the time he was arrested.
Penpushing reports that, Okupe commended President Muhammadu Buhari for immortalization of the late winner of 1993 Presidential, stating, ”I want to commend the President, because he deserves commendation for today’s celebration, he had done well”
Penpushing further reports that, Dr. Goke Rauf, who was the Guest lecturer called on the Yoruba people across Nigeria to be united in the interest of national unity, noting that the need for the unity was a principle of ‘charity begins at home as disunited group of people cannot exemplify unity at the National Front’.
The University Don, in his paper was of the view that the lack of political ideology among politicians remains one of the problems working against the unity of the Yoruba people, and urged the Yoruba’s to have rethink and work towards a common goal.
