19-year-old suspected transformer vandal electrocuted in Enugu

A suspected vandal identified as Sunday Nwode was on Friday, electrocuted inside a transformer house at Ngwo Camp 2, Coal Camp in Enugu, Enugu State while allegedly vandalising electrical cables of the transformer.

Penpushing reports that the Enugu State Police Command Public Relations Officer Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident in a statement, adding the electrocuted vandal was 19-year-old, and that the vandalised transformer belongs to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

The police spokesperson, a Deputy Superintendent of Police, explained that as at the time of filing this report, the body of the suspect had been taken to the hospital and deposited in the mortuary for preservation and further investigative actions

Penpushing further reports that the Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu, however, warned criminals who engage in such acts of vandalism to desist from it to avoid facing similar fate, stressing that apart from the prospect of being electrocuted, those who engage in vandalism will be prosecuted as soon as they were caught.

The spokesperson of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC), Emeka Ezeh, in a statement on Friday, said the victim must have died as power supply was restored while he was cutting the cables, describing the incident as tragic and very unfortunate.

Penpushing also reports that Ezeh while lamenting the increasing rate at which vandals attack Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) electricity installations on daily basis, noted that this is a development that has adversely impacted not just the quality of service to its customers but also its revenue

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC) spokesperson appealed to customers of the company to join hands with them to ensure protection of electricity facilities within their neighbourhoods.

‘This is a development that has adversely impacted not just the quality of service to its customers but also its revenue. It is a battle we all have to fight collectively because once these transformers are vandalised, customers who are served by the installation will be greatly affected’, Ezeh said.
