16-year-old pregnant girl commits suicide in Gombe state

A 16-year-old girl, Maryam Samuel, said to be pregnant for her boyfriend has reportedly committed suicide by hanging herself at Kaltungo in Kaltungo Local Government Area of Gombe state.

Penpushing reports that a source close to the family alleged that the pregnancy of the girl enraged her parents, having also discovered that she had been visiting her lover which the parents equally got wind.

The Gombe State Police Command Public Relations Officer Buhari Abdullahi, confirming the incident said the girl committed suicide by hanging on a tree, adding that the incident occurred on Friday, hours after the deceased left home to fetch firewood.

“On Friday, at about 9 a.m., a case of suicide was reported at Kaltungo Divisional Headquarters by the village head of Kalarin. The deceased, later identified as Maryam Samuel, 16 years old from Kalarin ward, was seen hanged with rope on a tree at Kalarin mountain without any marks of violence found on her body,” he said.

Penpushing further reports that Abdullahi explained that as at the time of filing this report the corpse had been deposited at the General Hospital Kaltungo, adding that preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased left home on Thursday to fetch firewood from the nearby bush.
