YOUTH GROUP URGES NATIONAL ASSEMBLY TO PASS 2019 ELECTORAL ACT
The Coordinator also called the National Assembly to make laws that would strengthen nation’s email law and make provision for punishment of electoral offenders ,adding, “We don’t speak just based on the emotion but based on findings on the data gathered on the field So it was on this basis of this that we made our findings known.
“Having said that how can we use legislative power to ensure that we have a better election in Nigeria? It is very clear. It is very important that legislature needs to rise up and amend our electoral laws and also our Constitution, strengthen the Electoral Act,
‘That was attempted before 2019 election general election but it is belated according to the response of the executive and then we couldn’t get that law operational before 2019 general elections’,, he emphasised
“I want to believe that the 9th National Assembly will has a responsibility to quickly attend to that bill since it still has about three years to function as a legislature. Attend to that bill, clean it up, take care of grey areas, strengthen sanctions for electoral offenders and then strengthen the capacity of the election management body as well as other areas that require improvement in our Electoral law.
“Nothing stops us from electronic voting. We are talking about punishment for electoral offenders. We are talking about the cost of election in Nigeria. We are talking about vote buying. All of these issue are things that went into that made election in Kogi State not to be credible. So, the legislature has the powers, functions and of course it is constitutionally empowered by our laws to make amends in order to improve the society. So we believe that the ninth Assembly can do that.
“And of course, we heard from good authority that the last amendment that was rejected has been reintroduced hope that the Assembly will quickly attend to that bill. And draw from our challenges both from the conduct of 2019 general election and off-cycle elections in Kogi and Bayelsa States”.
Penpushing further reports that, the theme of the meeting was :”Citizens’ Town Hall Meeting on Development of a Legislative Agenda”, while the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin in his remarks, noted that the meeting was the best way to determine what the people of the State need.
The Speaker, however called on all the people of the State to support the current House of Assembly in its bid to make laws that would impact the residents positively.
