The United Nations International for Migration (IOM) has trained representatives of communities in the South West of Nigeria on how to checkmate the nefarious activities of Human traffickers.
Penpushing reports that the training was held at Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Abeokuta, Ogun State Capital, while, the context of the training include the methodology of Human Trafficking whereby the traffickers cajole their victims with promise of Eldorado in foreign countries.
The training noted that the victims on arrival at destinations, are turned to prostitutes, slaves, beggars and victims of organs harvesting, while trauma of the victims also continue on deportation to Nigeria as they becomes excommunicated in the society.
Penpushing further reports that, the training noted that, National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) responsibility to cater and rehabilitate the victim begins from there, noting that only the community can identify such victims, and sometimes, the traffickers, for which they should blow the whistle.
The number of trainees while speaking expressed dismay at the neglect of the government in Nigeria to provide jobs and social amenities that are push factors for Nigerians, particularly the youth, to wanting to leave the country for greener locations.
Penpushing also reports that, participants commended Ogun State Government for including a traditional ruler in the State’s Task Force on National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons(NAPTIP) to attend the training, adding that they benefitted tremendously from the experience and contribution of the traditional ruler in the exercise.
