SELF-REGULATION BY CONTENT PRODUCERS, SOLUTION TO SOCIAL MEDIA MENACE – RANTHQ FOUNDER
The founder of one of the largest Facebook group joined the call in apparent reference to the on-going conversation surrounding the call for stronger regulation of the Social Media by the Government of Nigeria.
“There is no need for a special regulation of the social media by the government. If every social media content producer is mindful of the content disseminated and ensures that such a content conforms with human rights principles and the ethics of journalism, there would be no need for government to legislate the social media’, she stated.
Penpushing further reports that, she explained that Facebook already put in place some strict regulations and community control, adding, “besides, in RantHQ, we have our own set of rules and regulations that guide our over 1.2 million members especially as related to their conduct online. No profanity, No naming and shaming; No hate speech; No fake news; No body-shaming’.
The body pointed out that, social media are not only for negative things, but also have their positive sides, boasting that RantHQ is an example of using the social media for social good, adding that, through RantHQ, rescue have been organised for several persons who were minutes away from suicide in Lagos and Ibadan while seven women were also rescued from slavery in Oman in the Middle-East.
‘RantHQ members are continuously being empowered while its charity initiative is impacting the society positively with visit to IDPs camp in Abuja; visit to the slums of Mende Maryland; provision of food items to the Red Cross Motherless Babies Home and other orphanages in Lagos and outside Lagos’,she emphasised.
