Sagamu Riot: Ogun Government calls for calm, promises justice

The Ogun State Government has sued for peace over the violent protest that engulfed Sagamu town earlier on Monday, following alleged killing of Tiamiyu, the Assistant Captain of Remo Football Club, by a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad(SAES).

Penpushing reports that, the Special Adviser on Communications to the Governor, Rt Hon Remmy Hazzan, made the appeal in a statement ,noting that, ’in the first place, the  extra-judicial death of any resident in Ogun State is a very painful one for the government, let alone that of a promising youth, whose death the government will leave no stone unturned to ensure justice is not only done, but also seen to have been done at the end of the day.

The statement emphasized that, there is no doubt that our youth have the right to protest the killing of the late young football star, ’however, what started as a legitimate peaceful protest was hijacked by criminally minded people, who turned same into a violent one’.

‘As calm returns to the town, we urge the people, especially, the youth, to be law abiding and to go about their various businesses without taking laws into their hands. Finally, the Government wishes to restate that no one is above the law’.

‘Therefore, after detailed proper investigations into the killing of the late football star, decisive action shall be taken against anyone found culpable, as they face the full wrath of the law’.the statement declared.

Penpushing further reports that, the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, has broken his silence on the alleged murder of Kazeem Tiyamiyu (Kaka) by some operatives attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) on the Sagamu-Abeokuta road.

The police boss while speaking on the Monday protest, in a statement on the force’s official Twitter page, urged residents to remain calm even as he offered his condolences to the family of the deceased adding that those responsible for the death of the Nigerian footballer would be brought to book immediately after investigation has been concluded.

“The IGP M.A Adamu, NPM, mni has ordered the DIG in-charge of the FCID, DIG Anthony Ogbizi to, with immediate effect, take over investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of Late Mr. Tiamiyu Kazeem in Sagamu, Ogun State on 22nd February, 2020. The IGP gave the order today, 24th February, 2020 while reviewing daily reports of major crime incidents across the country’,the statement reads.

Meanwhile, the IGP while commiserating with the family and friends of the deceased, called for calm and assures that justice will be done in the matter, reiterating that any person found culpable will be brought to book.”
