Ogun State: Six alleged cultists shot dead in gun duel with police

Six suspected cultists were on Friday shot dead in Oke Oyinbo township along Market square of Igbogila town in Yewa North Local Government Area of Ogun State when they allegedly engaged the authorities in a gun duel.

Penpushing reports that, one of the alleged cultists was arrested by the Anti-Cultist department of the Ogun State Police Command and moved to the police headquarters in Abeokuta, a development which his gang thought wasn’t favourable to them, hence mobilised themselves and stormed the police station in the town to effect his release.

The Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the incident, adding that, unknown to the alleged cultists, the member arrested had been moved to Abeokuta, and dawned on them when they knew about the transfer of the suspect to police headquarters for further interrogation.

Penpushing also reports that, Oyeyemi added that the alleged cultists thereafter launched violent and bloody attack on the police station with various dangerous weapons and engaged police in a gun duel, which led to the death of some of them

“Yes, one of their colleagues was arrested by anti cultists squad and taken to the headquarters, the others thinking that the arrested one is being detained at Igbogila division mobilized themselves and attacked the station with dangerous weapons such as gun, axes and cutlasses, the policemen on duty repelled them and some of them were fatally shot”, Oyeyemi stated.

Penpushing further reports that, one of the alleged cultists with armlets on his body, while narrating the incident to a member of Ogun State House of Assembly, Hon Adegoke Awoso, representing the constituency, said power tussle had earlier brewed between youths of two communities in Igbogila axis, alleging that police came to effect arrest of a member of a faction, which the other group considered as unfair.

The boy said the police stormed Igbogila late night and whisked away one of them, adding that in the course of the arrest, the police mercilessly beat many innocent people, adding that those arrested were treated like common criminals, insisting that the youths in the community are not criminals as the police wanted the public to believe.

Penpushing also reports that as at the time the lawmaker was talking to them, the youths insisted that they would not leave the major road leading to the town, in protest to the arrest of one of them,as well as killings ,stressing that, they were waiting for additional policemen to be deploy to the town to “come and kill more of us”

Meanwhile, sources informed that, the alleged cultists in the course of attack on the police station, made away with a service pistol, which was later recovered through the intervention of the lawmaker, while the pistol as at the time of filing this report had been handed over to a Police Officer identified as Haruna Anthony
