Ogun state government sets to commence alternate medicine operations

The Ogun State is set for the operations of Alternate medicine aimed to address various health challenges, and this follows creation of five departments in order to achieve the technical purposes.

Penpushing reports that, the Chairman Alternate Medicine Board, Balogun Nurudeen Olaleye made this known in his speech at stakeholders meeting held at the June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, adding that the departments include: registration and licensing, herbs and therapeutics, planning, education and research, administration and supply, finance and account

The Chairman commended Governor Dapo Abiodun for establishing the board at this trying time in the health sector, noting that, it is no more a news that the world at large is presently finding alternative cure to different ravaging public health problems including the deadly coronavirus.

Penpushing further reports that Olaleye recalled that the Alternative Medicine Board came into being in Ogun State following the inauguration by the Governor on the 29th September, 2020.

‘The bill that established the board was passed into law in 2006 but the present administration understands the importance of the law and put the board in place. The board comprises of the pioneer chairman, my humble self, Balogun Nurudeen Olaleye, the board secretary, Dr Lawal Kafayat and the board members’, he said.

Penpushing also reports that, Olaleye explained that the mission of the board is to support efficient health service delivery across state through alternate medicines.

The board will also established an environment whereby the alternate medicine practitioners legally and freely render their services under the law in parallel but in clear understanding of each other and in close collaboration with all levels of health care delivery in Ogun state’, he stated

The Chairman added that the madate of the board include; to develop policies guiding the practitioners and their practices as well as implement, review and monitor compliance of the policies,to coordinate the activities of the Traditional and Alternate practitioners in the state.

*To promote the development and commercialization of indigenous Nigerian Traditional Medicine.

*Supervision of alternate medical institutions owned and operated by alternate medical practitioners in the State.

*To carry out qualitative test and ensure other toxicity screening and testing of products; hence promote evidence based use of the herbal products.

Penpushing reports that, he disclosed that the board set out to coordinate the activities of the traditional and alternate practitioners in the State, adding that the Alternate Medicine practitioners as approved by the law setting up the agency include: bone setters, diviners (Babalawos and Osanyin),herbalist  and occultist

The Chairman said approved list also include: oracle consultants, spiritualist, traditional birth attendants, traditional psychiatrist, traditional Surgeons, homoeopaths

‘In addition, barely less than two months after the commencement of its activities, the Chairman has met with more than fifty groups with different names and practices across the state’.

‘My meetings with different group leaders facilitated today’s meeting and I am happy to inform the general house that our discussion are part and parcel of this program and the future ones.

‘Furthermore, committees comprising of stakeholders from relevant agencies across MDAs were formed and saddled with different responsibilities in order to ensure the smooth take-off and successful running of the agency’, he stated.

The Chairman solicited for support, emphasizing that the board was established for the benefit of humanity, stressing, ‘it is on this note that we solicit for further support from both governmental and non-governmental organization in order to achieve the aim with which this board was established and ensure the sustainability of the board beyond this present administration’.

‘It is this legacy we set out to achieve so that the generation yet unborn can benefit from our efforts. On this note, I want to enjoin all of us to work in unity for the progress of the board, the prosperity of the practitioners and well-being of the good people of Ogun state’, Olaleye said.

‘Let me also use this opportunity to appreciate all the Stakeholders here present and to assure all the leaders of different groups that we shall live to take this board to the promise land’, the chairman said.
