Nigerian legend musician, Fashek is dead

The Nigerian reggae musician, Fashek Majek has died in New York, United States of America (USA), and this was made known by his Manager and Publicist, Omenka Uzoma in a video uploaded by HipTV.

Penpushing reports that, Majek was a household name in music industry across the globe in his heydays, but later got addicted to drugs, which led to his bankrupt and seriously affected his health.

The musician, born as Majekodunmi  Fashake at a point was deported back to Nigeria from United States of America, and for few years  became a destitute on Lagos streets, while his wife, Rita later divorced him

Penpushing further reports that, in 2019, there were rumours of Majek’s death, but he debunked confirming that he was receiving treatment at a rehabilitation centre on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

The publicist in September sought financial help from the public to help care for him, a call that was heeded by many, including businessman Femi Otedola, and was  later taken to a London Hospital and treated for several months before being moved to the United States in January 2020 to be with his family.

Penpushing also reports that, Majek, toured the world with the sound of African reggae with hits such as the ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ and ‘Send Down the Rain’, while his 1988 album ‘Prisoner of Conscience’ and the single ‘Send Down the Rain’ became a major hit worldwide and garnered multiple awards, including Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria’s album of the year in 1989.

This was followed by ‘So Long for Too Long’ in 1991, which incorporated haunting vocals with the artist’s captivating rhythm while .in the early 2000s, Majek, whose stage name was a condensed form of his full name Majekodunmi Fasheke, featured in some local film productions in Nigeria, including ‘Mark of the Beast’.

Meanwhile, the late music legend, Majekodunmi Fasheke whose age was not disclosed as at the time of filing this report was survived by four children and his ex-wife, Rita.
