IKEJA ELECTRICITY DISCONNECTS JOURNALISTS ESTATE, AS RESIDENTS PROTEST OUTRAGEOUS BILLINGS
‘In the process of the exercise, the firm disconnected the whole estate. As it is, those who are not owing, who have continued to be law abiding were also disconnected. We view this as a wrong and provocative approach’.
‘We are not averse to the Ikeja Electric taking steps to recover its debts from those who are owing, but we believe that the company should go about it without inconveniencing creditors and loyal customers. We want this matter laid to rest as quickly as possible, hence our protest. The alleged debts, we wish to mention, were incurred through estimated billings, which our members consider outrageous’.
‘We have however been making efforts to get prepaid meters for those without meters, all to no avail. We believe that with pre – paid meters, all these agitations over estimated bills and debts will be finally laid to rest’, they emphasised.
Penpushing further reports that, consequent upon their grievances the residents with bill clean of health demanded that, immediate reconnection of power to the Journalists estate phase 1 by the Ikeja Electric Plc.
Other demands stated; that prepaid meters be given to those yet to be metred, that our members who are owing are ready to agree to a payment plan with Ikeja Electric on how to offset their debts, and that a way be found round the issue of estimated billing which has caused a row between some residents and the Ikeja Electric.
Penpushing further reports that, a copy of the protest letter has been sent to the Chairman Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and Ikeja Electric Consumers Forum as well as Managing Director Ikeja Electricity Plc.
