Gendi , Non-Governmental Organisation calls for establishment of additional correctional homes

A Non-Governmental Organisation, Gender Development Initiative (GendDi) has called for establishment additional correctional homes and expansion of the capacity of the existing motherless babies’ homes, as well as review of existing laws and policies on women and adolescent reproductive rights.

Penpushing reports that, Executive Director of the Initiative, Prof Olubunmi Ashimolowo made the call at a press conference held at  Pious Events Centre, Ijeun-Lukosi, Abeokuta on occasion marking 2020 International Women’s Day Celebration.

The Director said the Initiative is also committed to the empowerment of disadvantaged children and women in the society, adding that, ’Gender Development Initiative proudly launched the Women’s economic empowerment scheme, in our efforts to advance women’s economic empowerment’

Penpushing further reports that Ashimolowo pointed out that across the globe, women are making significant contributions to prosperity, security, government and innovation, hence, the need to accord them their rights in the society and governance.

The organization said it recognizes  that societies that empower women to participate fully in civic and economic life are more prosperous and peaceful, adding that the body has handled over 100 cases ranging from child abuse, spousal abuse to neglect

‘Our organization strongly believes that women have a critical role to play in peaceful conflict resolution. We had in time past, prior to elections supported women leaders, via sensitization and awareness creation on critical roles played by women in global stability, security and prosperity, creating a safer world and a safer Nigeria, in which UN 1325 treaty is critical”

The organization while calling for better society for women folks appealed to government to see Non-Governmental Organisations as partners in progress, and on the 35% affirmative action, she posited that 50% is not even a bad idea

Penpushing also reports that, Ashimolowo who boasted that her organization has remain a pioneer of women led organization in Nigeria, said Gender Development Initiatives under its ten years of operations have contributed in numerous ways to the development of children, youths and women through strategic activities.

Meanwhile, notable dignitaries at the press conference : Mrs Oluwakemi Oni, Ms Abimbola Oladipo, Yinka Akibola, Prof Olubunmi Ashimolowo, Mrs Esther Adewunmi and Dr Abayomi Erinoso among others.
