The Divisional Police Officer, Gabriel Amawu of Obudu Division, in the northern Cross River State has reported to have mistakenly shot himself to death during a stand-off between the police and the students of the Federal College of Education, Obudu.
Penpushing reports that, the students were said to be celebrating the end of their final examination, which led to violence and suspected cultists among them were arrested and taken to the police station for further interrogation.
The aggrieved colleagues of the arrested students were said to have stormed the police station to effect release of the arrested colleagues, and the Divisional Police Officer in attempt to scare the protesting students was loading his gun when it exploded
“I think it happened last night between 10 p.m. and 11p.m. I think they were having crisis with the students there. I think one of the students was arrested, that is what led to the crisis,” the police spokesperson in the state, Irene Ugbo was quoted saying
Penpushing further reports that, the Commissioner of Police, Nkereuwem Akpan who confirmed the incident said, Amawu. a Deputy Superintendent of Police, died of gunshot ‘ from accidental discharge from a gun he was trying to load”.
