The Coordinator of Naccima Business Women Group (NAWORG), Mrs Cyntia Saka has disclosed that one of the major reasons for the establishment of the group was to protect and serve the interest of the womenfolk in breaking bias against them

Penpushing reports that, Saka made this known at the celebration of Women’s Day organized by  Naccima Business Women Group(NAWORG) in collaboration with Nigeria Association of Women Journalists(NAWOJ),Ogun State Chapter and Ogun State Women Sheabutter Golden Farmers Cooperative Multipurpose Society, held in Abeokuta

‘NACCIMA established NAWORG was to create a platform that would promote and protect the interest of women in business. This concept aligned with the celebration of international women’s day’, she stated.

Penpushing further reports that,  Saka pointed out that  International Women’s day (March 8) is a  global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, adding that . it marks a call to action for accelerating women equality.

‘This day is important to women as it acknowledged  their achievements and contributions in different fields. The day was first observed on 28th February 1909 when the Socialist Party went onto streets protesting against uncomfortable working conditions of women’, she recalled.

Penpushing further reports that, she declared that, this year’s theme, ‘Break the Bias’, was apt, noting that bias has continued to hold women, workplaces and businesses back, and called on women to help in breaking the jinx by joining hands together.

‘Over the years, European countries marked 8th March as international women’s day, but became official by United Nations in 1975. Today international women’s day belongs to all groups collectively everywhere’.

‘The official colour of IWD is purple, green and white. Purple symbolises Justice and Dignity, white stands for Purity and Green represents Hope. This year’s theme is very apt. Bias continues to hold women, workplaces and businesses back, so this International Women’s Day let us all join hands to help Break the bias at work, businesses, homes, etc’.

‘This is even worse in this part of the world where the system and culture conspire in a vicious cycle to work against women in reaching their full potentials.  Statistical women made up 50% of our country population thus should be on equal footing with the male folks’.

‘We all know that this is not the case. We work often twice the male for whatever we achieved and in some cases denied what rightly belongs to us. The journey to the present had been demanding and slow. Women have made important gains in representation in the last few years. But we’re still a long way from equality’.

‘The society, governments,  employers etc need to act now to support, retain, and advance women. Combating the biases women face at work, business etc is critical to getting this right’,she added.

‘Research shows that bias contributes to women being passed over for jobs, business opportunities and promotions. Almost 60 per cent of women regularly experience micro aggressions at work. And women of color, and women with disabilities face more acute biases. But fewer than half of these women say they’ve spoken out against biased behavior at any point in their life’.

‘Knowing that bias exists isn’t enough. We all need to take action to BreakThe Bias — on International Women’s Day and beyond. Imagine a gender equal world.  A world free of bias, stereotypes and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated’.

‘Together we can forge women’s equality. Collectively we can all BreakThe Bias. Celebrate women’s achievement. Raise awareness against bias. Take action for equality. Supports International  Women’s Day.  International Women’s Day is powered by the collective efforts of all’,Saka added

‘Collective action and shared ownership for driving gender parity is what makes International Women’s Day impactful. The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights. So make International Women’s Day your day and do what you can to truly make a positive difference for women’, she emphasised.
