BREAKING: AT LAST PEACE CORPS BILL ARRIVES BUHARI’S DESK FOR ASSENT

However, when the bill is signed into law, the Nigerian Peace Corps (Establishment) Bill 2017 will give legal backing to the establishment of Peace Corps of Nigeria and also allow all serving members of the Peace Corps of Nigeria, both regular and volunteers, to be absolved into the Nigerian Peace Corps, at commencement.

Similarly, it would be recalled that, Nigerian Police had on February 17, 2017 stormed the Peace Corps headquarters in Abuja and arrested the head of the organisation, Dickson Akoh, as well as about 49 other members.

Akoh and his men were accused of using the Peace Corps, registered as a Non-Governmental Organisation, to swindle young job seekers and operate as a para-military agency, but after arraignment  has since been granted bail.

In the same vein, Federal High Court in Abuja subsequently ordered the Nigeria Police to unseal the headquarters of the Peace Corps and pay N12.5 million as damages, but as at the time of filing this report, police has not complied with the order.
