Bandits kill 30, injure many during market attack in Sokoto state

Bandits have rendered havoc at a weekly market in Goronyo local government area of Sokoto state killing at least 30 people and maimed many others, when they circled the market and started shooting sporadically

Penpushing reports that, the attack occurred barely 12 days after the bandits shot dead number of innocent people at Unguwar Lalle market in Sabon Birni local government area of the state

The Sunday attack saw the bandits pressing in on people attending the popular market, just as a resident Bashir Adamu, a retired civil servant from Sabon Birni, described the attack as a black day for the people of the area.

Penpushing further reports that, a human rights activist in the state, Basharu Guyawa, while reacting to the sad development said the bandits raided the market with a force of about 200 men, adding that it was horrendous.

“What we learnt is that over 150 to 200 of them (bandits) on motorcycles rode through the Gundumi forest to Goronyo town. They went straight into the market and started shooting sporadically. They were not selective in their shooting; they obviously came to kill’, he said.

 Penpushing also reports that, Guyawa, the Coordinator of Rundunar Adalci, said nobody could ascertain the number of those killed in attack that locals said lasted for several hours, stressing that it was worrisome.

Meanwhile, the Sokoto State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Sanusi Abubakar, was yet to react or issue any official statement on the incident as at the time of filing this report.
