
Abeokuta Club restates call for innovative, ethical leadership
The Abeokuta Club has reinforced the need for innovative, ethical leadership and disruptive thinking for Nigeria’s progress, as it recapped its rich history and traditions, having hosted lecture series since 1972.
Penpushing reports that this was contained in summary at the 2025 Sobo Sowemimo Annual Memorial Lecture and General Meeting, held in a hybrid (physical and virtual) involving guests, members academic leaders and elder.
The President of the club Dr. Adewale Adeola welcome participants and highlighted the activities of the club since inception some decades ago, and equally acknowledged the presence of the Chairman of the event Professor Adekunle Oloyede.
Penpushing further reports that the club boss pointed out that the occasion chairman is a renowned international academic and innovator, adding that his significant contributions span medical, mechanical, and agricultural engineering.

Th guest lecturer Dr. Mutiu Sunmonu in his paper presentation themed, ‘Fixing Nigeria: Disruptive Thinking for Nigeria’s Socio-Economic Development’, highlighted four pillars for disruptive development:
Penpushing also reports that he identified the pillars as include education reform, calling for an overhaul toward critical thinking, digital skills adoption, and integrity, citing example such as early integration of digital equipment in schools and the transition to remote learning during the pandemic.
The former Managing Director Shell Nigeria added that others are economic diversification, moving away from oil dependency to sectors such as agriculture, technology, and creative economy, stressing infrastructure.
Penpushing reports that he added that governance and transparency, emphasizing trust, transparency, and adherence to law – prerequisites to attraction of viable investments as well as cultural renewal: promoting values such as integrity, empathy, and equity in business and daily life.
The family of the late Sowemimo expressed appreciation to the club for continuing the club’s traditions, while the guest lecturer was honoured by the club with full membership, acknowledging his contributions.
Meanwhile, in a vote of thanks the Life President, Prof. Afolabi Soyode, prayed for continued unity, advancement, and peaceful co – existence.
