14-year-old schoolgirl drowns while fetching water

A 14-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS1) student of Saint Andrew Academy, Tunga Minna in Paikoro Local Government Area of Niger State Elizabeth Peter, has reported drowned at Chanchaga River while fetching water.

Penpushing reports that her aunt identified as Abigail Idoko said the girl, was at the river with her siblings on Saturday for the first time because the family could not find water vendors to buy from.

The aunt lamented that she was swept away while fetching water, explaining that it took about two hours to recover her body from a deep pit in the river which serves as a major water source for nearby communities.

Penpushing further reports that at the family residence at Korokpa, during a visit, her mother was in shock, while her father, a soldier, was said to be in Zamfara State on official duty as at the time of filing this report

The Korokpa, like many communities in the local government area, has long challenge with access to clean water, while residents are known to rely on water vendors, boreholes, or natural sources like the Chanchaga River to meet their daily needs.
